HISTORY

VP Most recently took a huge jump and decided to audition for competitions beyond their annual annual ICCA appearance. To their delight, they were accepted into the VoiceJam competition in Fayetteville, Arkansas. At the competition, their very own, Nick Quintana, was awarded with “Outstanding Arrangement” for his arrangement of “Medusa” originally performed by Kaia Jette. This award was given out by prominent figures in the a cappella such as Deke Sharon (Arranger of the music in the Pitch Perfect Trilogy) and Claude Mcknight (member of Grammy Award winning a cappella group, Take 6).

Beyond their win at VoiceJam, Vocal Point was proud of creating such a meaningful and impactful piece of art. Their set this year features the true untold story of Medusa, exploring themes of loss of innocence, rage, and ultimately reclamation. The story explores themes of sexual assault and reclaiming power over one’s abuser. It was very inspiring and impactful to have won numerous awards for their performance, while also creating something that had such a strong message.

Vocal Point was started by a small group of friends in 1998 who had a passion for singing! To differentiate themselves from other groups on campus, VP started out as an 80s tribute group. Pictured on the right, an inside look at one of Vocal Point’s first ever rehearsals as a group!

Since then, Vocal Point has grown and flourished in the a cappella world for the last 26 years! Annually, they compete in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, excelling every year in the competition. They have gone to the Semifinals 9 times, placing in the top three numerous times. In 2014 the group placed third in the entire international competition, proving their excellence in the community.

VP has released numerous studio albums, their most recent addition being “Collision” which features their award winning set from the 2023 season. The songs featured on the album are “Think About things” OPB Daði Freyr, “Fall in Line” OPB Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato, and “Thriller” OPB Michael Jackson. VP has built up a sense of creative momentum and can not wait to accomplish much more in the future. Cheers to over 25 years of Vocal Point. They want to let you know they are just getting started!
